Definr launches to document the words and phrases traditional dictionaries have yet to record

For immediate release4 August 2026Lancashire, England

LANCASHIRE, England — 4 August 2026 – Definr, a new UK-based online dictionary and publishing platform, today announced its public launch, providing a dedicated home for original words and phrases that have yet to be recognised by traditional dictionaries. Available now at definr.co.uk, the platform combines a moderated public dictionary with an integrated creator that enables contributors to write structured dictionary entries and produce professionally designed dictionary cards ready for sharing across social media.

Language evolves continuously. Every day, people create expressions to describe feelings, situations, habits and shared experiences that existing vocabulary cannot quite capture. Some become inside jokes between friends, others develop into local slang, workplace terminology or online expressions understood by thousands of people without ever appearing in a traditional dictionary. Many are eventually forgotten altogether.

Definr was created to provide a permanent home for this emerging language.

Rather than waiting years for new vocabulary to become established before it is documented, Definr allows contributors to create original words and phrases as they emerge, define their meaning, explain their origin, demonstrate how they are used and submit them for editorial review. Approved entries become part of the growing Definr Dictionary, where they are published as permanent, searchable pages that can be shared and referenced online.

Alongside the public dictionary, Definr includes a purpose-built creator that transforms dictionary entries into polished visual cards. Contributors can select different editorial styles, layouts and formats before exporting high-quality images suitable for sharing across platforms including Instagram, Facebook, X, Threads and messaging apps. Every published entry also receives automatically generated social preview assets, allowing links to display rich previews wherever they are shared.

While many online platforms encourage creativity, Definr has been designed to combine creativity with structure. Every entry follows familiar dictionary conventions, including pronunciation, grammatical classification, definition, usage examples and contextual information where appropriate. This approach gives original language the same clarity and consistency readers expect from established reference works while allowing entirely new vocabulary to be documented from the moment it is created.

Unlike conventional dictionaries, which primarily record language after it has become widely accepted, Definr focuses on documenting language while it is still evolving. The platform recognises that many meaningful expressions exist outside formal publications, developing instead through families, friendship groups, workplaces, online communities and everyday conversation. These words and phrases often describe experiences that people immediately recognise but struggle to express because no widely accepted term yet exists.

Each public submission undergoes editorial moderation before publication. This process is intended to maintain quality, improve consistency and ensure the public dictionary develops as a reliable reference rather than an unmoderated collection of user-generated content. Published entries receive permanent web addresses, structured metadata, dedicated social preview images and professionally formatted dictionary cards, creating a lasting record that remains discoverable through search engines and social platforms.

“Language doesn't begin in dictionaries. It begins with people. Every day, someone invents a better way of describing a feeling, a habit or an experience that everyone immediately understands. Most of those expressions disappear because nobody records them. Definr exists to give those words a place to live before they are forgotten.” Jack Whittle, Founder of Definr

The public Definr Dictionary already contains almost 2,000 published entries spanning British life, internet culture, local slang, workplace vocabulary, fictional terminology and community-created language. Contributors can browse existing entries, discover related vocabulary, or use the Definr Creator to develop and submit original words and phrases of their own.

The launch represents the first public release of a platform designed not only to catalogue emerging language, but also to publish it. By combining editorial moderation, permanent publishing, visual presentation and social sharing within a single workflow, Definr aims to bridge the gap between the way language is created and the way it is traditionally documented.

Future development of the platform will focus on expanding discovery tools, improving browsing across topics and collections, introducing additional publishing features and continuing to build a comprehensive public record of original and emerging language.

Definr is available now at definr.co.uk.
